The 2014 Boldface Visiting Writers
Fiction: Amber Dermont is the author of the novel The Starboard Sea and the short story collection Damage Control. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Amber received her PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston. Her work has appeared in American Short Fiction, Crazyhorse, Open City, Tin House, TriQuarterly, Zoetrope: All-Story and the anthologies Best New American Voices, The Best American Nonrequired Reading, The Worst Years of Your Life and Home of the Brave: Stories in Uniform. She is the recipient of a Literature Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and currently teaches at Rice University.
Poetry: Franke Ambrose Varca received his BA from the University of Houston, where he helped start Glass Mountain and Boldface. He completed his MFA in poetry from the University of Michigan with a Helen Zell Fellowship and an Avery Hopwood Award. Other acknowledgements include two Academy of American Poets prizes, a finalist designation from the Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowship Foundation, and a “Discovery”/ Boston Review prize. He currently divides time between the Hudson Valley and New York City, working as managing editor of Sheep Meadow Press.
Nonfiction: David Stuart MacLean is a Pen/American award-winning writer. His work has appeared in Ploughshares, The New York Times, and on the radio program This American Life. He has a PhD from the University of Houston and is a co-founder of the Poison Pen Reading Series. He has taught at the University of Chicago, Columbia College, and The School of the Art Institute in Chicago. David’s memoir, The Answer to the Riddle is Me, was published in January 2014 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
